Description of role:

The Surface, Corrosion and Interface (SCI) team undertake research on behalf of industry into understanding materials behaviour and improving performance. Within this activity, TWI Ltd offers a unique service to Members worldwide on the study of separation processes from multicomponent fluids through polymers, along with the corresponding ageing processes. This role will primarily support the established activities relating to understanding of transport or permeation phenomena through non-metallic materials across a range of industry sectors, including oil & gas, aerospace, power generation and automotive. There is the opportunity to work across diverse industrial applications, including fuel transport/storage (e.g. sweet/sour hydrocarbons and supporting the transition to hydrogen), electrification (e.g. battery and fuel cell components) and renewable energy generations (e.g. electrolysers).  

 

The successful candidate will enjoy responsibility for, and rapidly gain experience in, these areas. You will contribute to the core skills of an exciting and innovative established team of scientists and engineers by taking on responsibilities including project management, preparation of proposals, laboratory-based experimental work, data analysis of permeation traces, and preparation of reports.

 

We are recruiting for a Project Leader or Senior Project Leader position depending on qualifications and experience. The successful applicant's main duties and responsibilities would include:

 

•Defining experimental and analytical characterisation work to be completed

•Keeping track of polymer specimens and data updates on a daily basis

•Data analysis and interpretation (knowledge and experience of Matlab/Python/similar preferred)

•Producing high quality reports and/or research papers arising from project work

Responding to technical enquiries from clients with clear, accurate, comprehensive information

•Managing projects within agreed budgets and timescales

 

The role would also include: 

•Visiting clients, presenting to clients, and hosting client visits to TWI

•Identifying and developing business opportunities

•Understanding customers' requirements, accurately costing the effort required and writing detailed, high quality proposals and project reports

•Working with colleagues to bid for publically funded research projects

•Maintaining and developing your own technical expertise and reputation

 

PhD-level qualification in an area of polymer physics (membrane evaluation, mathematics of transport processes or related relevant discipline) is preferred. Experience in permeation and/or polymer structure analytical methods would be highly relevant to the advertised role. 

 

Travel: 

This position will require occasional travel both in the UK and abroad.
