Trainee Counsellor 
Part-time, unpaid trainee position 
Nine-Month Placement Commencing September 2024 until June 2025 (Term Time - must commit to one day a week, subject to the trainee’s requirement for placement hours)

About the role 

The Fashion Retail Academy Counselling team is growing and as a result, we can offer a Trainee Counsellor the opportunity to obtain clinical hours providing face-to-face counselling to young adults in an academic setting.  The trainee counsellor would build on the work of our existing team.  The counsellors that make up our team use a wide range of theoretical models though most would describe their working as integrative, as they endeavour to meet the needs of our individuals.  All counsellors adhere and follow the BACP Ethical Framework guidelines.   

The role will provide short to medium term counselling to individuals that encourage healthy mental and emotional development while promoting longer-term resilience. Early intervention and support are key to ensuring we support individuals and enable them to achieve to the best of their ability. 

About you 

  • You must have completed at minimum, at least 50 hours of face-to-face counselling.
  • You must either be completing a L4 counselling course or be currently enrolled in a further qualification that requires placement hours. 
  • The trainee must also be familiar with and follow the ethical framework of the BACP guidelines when working in education. 
  • It is essential that you have an awareness of Further Education, a good understanding of equality and diversity issues, safeguarding, with experience working therapeutically with young people. 
  • The successful candidate will be personable, highly compassionate, and genuinely interested in supporting young adult mental health in education. 
  • You must be a confident communicator and be able to build rapport quickly with students and develop positive, cooperative, and effective working relationships within a multidisciplinary team. 

Please note, that this role is a part-time, unpaid trainee position with one designated day a week that is agreed between the successful candidate and line manager.  This position requires the trainee to be on site that designated day between 9-4pm to provide face-to-face counselling, and attend a monthly group and individual supervision.    

There will be a compulsory induction training the week of 19 August 2024 at the FRA that will be arranged with the Counselling Coordinator to provide a general introduction to the Service and the placement.
